ACHS Photo of the Week: Have you submitted your entry?

Help us spread the word ... ACHS has launched a Photo of the Week "contest" on Facebook. Every Monday morning we pick one of the photo submissions we received and post it to ACHS Facebook with the photographer's name and a little info about the image.

Photo submissions must be botanical images: from your own garden, from a public garden, from your community, a rooftop garden, from .... ? We don't care where it's from, just that it makes an interesting and unique addition to our collection of herbal medicine photos accessible to the public through ACHS Facebook.

You must, therefore, have the rights to distribute the photo, and you must be OK with us sharing the image on our page.

Adding Fresh Herbs to Ice Cream is a Savory, Healthy Flavoring

The weather is heating up here in Portland. We've had a few days of cooler weather and rain, but we're expected to reach 85 degrees for the next few days! That means, cool and refreshing treats are in order. We happily came across the article "Fresh herbs make sweet and sophisticated ice cream" in the Oregonian a few days ago, which includes some great recipes from the garden. Fresh mint ice cream anyone?

Here are some herbal pairings suggested in the article that sound especially refreshing:

  • Chocolate and thyme
  • Rhubarb and rose geranium
  • Honey and lavender
  • Orange and rosemary
  • Rhubarb and mint
  • Pear or apple with rosemary
  • Blueberry, strawberry or peach with basil
  • Cinnamon and basil
  • Fig and rosemary
  • Cherries and sage
  • Stone fruit (peaches, nectarines, plums) and anise hyssop

ACHS Facebook fans have also posted their pairing suggestions to our page. Check them out here and post your own suggestions: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Portland-OR/American-College-of-Healthcare-Sciences/99091122240

Download Your Recording Of Our August 10 Teleconference, EOS Aromatherapy for Pre and Post-Operative Care with Michelle Bravo

Our August 10, 2010, teleconference with Michelle Bravo--EOS Aromatherapy for Pre and Post-Operative Care--was very informative! Michelle, an ACHS graduate, has developed a very unique aromatherapy practice, which she calls EOS aromatherapy and integrates with her massage practice. Participants learned about what EOS means for Michelle as a practice, as well as strategies for working with clients, attracting clients and referrals, and for starting a business.

For those who were able to attend, we sincerely hope you enjoyed the teleconference! Our teleconferences have limited space and are, therefore, only open to ACHS students and graduates. However, we know there are many of you who would like to attend and to learn more about integrating holistic health and wellness into your everyday life. So, we are very happy to be able to post a recording of EOS Aromatherapy for Pre and Post-Operative Care for your enjoyment.

Happy USA Independence Day, July Fourth!

The celebration of our nation’s “birthday” has come to mean friends, family, food and fireworks! The Fourth of July barbeque is an American tradition, and usually consists of many high calorie, high fat foods that have increased the risk for cardiovascular disease. According to Associated Content, the top ten Fourth of July foods are: potato salad, lemonade, pasta salad, watermelon, hot dogs, potato chips, hamburgers, baked beans and chicken. Let’s not forget the soda, desserts and ice cream!

Why not be the instrument of change for this year’s barbeque by making a healthy dish! The following is a great link to “Farmer’s Market Vegetable Recipes”, with some great recipes such as: Pizza Potatoes, Creole Zucchini and Red, White, and Green Salad: http://www.mass.gov/agr/markets/farmersmarkets/resources_consumers_recipes.htm

There also are great holistic nutrition recipes contributed by ACHS students and graduates on ACHS Facebook Holistic Kitchen discussion. Here’s the link to download new recipes ideas and post your favorites too: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=99091122240&topic=13172

This kit was personally designed by ACHS President Dorene Petersen and includes 5 ml of aloe vera and 5 ml each of the antibacterial, health-promoting essential oils cinnamon, ginger, lavender, lemon, peppermint, tea tree Australia, and ylang ylang.
