Cinnamon for Diabetes: New Survey Shows CAM Used with Diabetes Mellitus

Incidence of diabetes is on the rise. Though at this time there is no known cure, the World Health Organization recommends several lifestyle modifications that may help prevent onset of Type II Diabetes, including healthy diet, regular exercise, maintaining normal body weight, and avoiding tobacco use.

For those managing Type I and Type II Diabetes, a 2011 survey by the Diabetes Center of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism shows patients with Diabetes Mellitus are using Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM) as a support with conventional health care.

Of the almost 200 diabetes patients surveyed, 34% of Type I Diabetics and 31% of Type II Diabetics reported using CAM supplements. In addition, 56% of Type I Diabetics and 76% of Type II Diabetics who reported using biologically based supplements said they used them daily with conventional health care and prescribed therapies. Nutritional supplements, herbal medicines, and cinnamon were the most frequently reported CAM supplements used.

If you love cinnamon as many of us do, you'd be interested to know the common culinary spice is currently being researched as a useful supplement with Type II Diabetes. It is thought that cinnamon may lower blood sugar by decreasing insulin resistance; in those with Type II Diabetes, insulin, the hormone which lowers blood sugar, does not work efficiently which causes higher blood sugar levels. Further studies are needed, however, to determine the long-term effects of cinnamon on diabetes.

Propolis Exhibits Strong Free Radical Scavenging Activity

No matter where the bees live, they know to collect the good stuff, just as they do with nectar & pollen.

"Chemical Characterization of Iraqi Propolis Samples and Assessing their Antioxidant Potentials"
Food and Chemical Toxicology, 20-June, 2011
About this Journalauthors:
Ghassan M. Sulaiman, Khulood W. Al Sammarrae, Ali H. Ad’hiah, Massimo Zucchetti, Roberta Frapolli, Ezia Bello, Eugenio Erba, Maurizio D’Incalci, Renzo Bagnati

Propolis samples, collected from different geographical locations in Iraq (Baghdad, Dahuk, Mosul and Salah ad-Din), were analyzed and assessed for their anti-oxidant activity.

Concentrations of phenolic compounds (flavonoids, phenolic acids and their esters) in propolis were estimated using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray mass spectrometry. Thirty-eight different compounds were identified and thirty-three of them were polyphenols. Other compounds were tentatively identified as clerodane diterpenoids, and one was considered unknown.

Semi-quantitative measurements showed that phenolic acids and their esters were the predominant constituents in propolis extracts, followed by flavones and flavonols, and then flavanones and dihydroflavonols.

Propolis samples were further spectrophotometrically characterized using the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent for the determination of total phenolic compounds. The free radical scavenging activities of propolis samples were also evaluated by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay.

The results revealed that propolis extracts exhibited strong free radical scavenging activity."

Propolis Essential Oil Helps Decrease Anxiety

Propolis is a very rich resource of bioflavonoids, deserving much more research...

Therapeutic Effects of Propolis Essential Oil on Anxiety of Restraint Stress Mice
Hum Exp Toxicol, 2011 Jun 14

Current IssuePropolis has a broad spectrum of biological activities; however, whether its essential oils have neuroprotective effects is unknown.

In this study, we found that propolis essential oil (PEO) could significantly reverse the anxiety-like behavior of restraint-stressed mice, and has no effect on locomotor activity. Furthermore, PEO significantly decreased the plasma levels of cortisol (CORT), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and malondialdehyde (MDA), whereas it increased the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in restraint-stressed mice.

These results strongly suggest that PEO has therapeutic effects on anxiety through antagonizing the hyperfunction of hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal (HPA) axis and improving the ability of antioxidation in brain tissue.

how to Maintain Fitness For The Busy

A health expert in the United States declared that the exercise is not as dangerous as smoking. So, if for health reasons you have stopped smoking, for the same reasons of physical activity what have you done?
Many people who live and work in a big city feel that sports programming is a mammoth burden of a very difficult place. Starting from time, cost, up to a big city environment that is not sports-friendly. Meanwhile, ACSM (American College of Sports Medicine) since 1998 has established that physical activity per week are recommended for healthy adults in order to maintain health and fitness including aerobic exercise 3-5 days, 2-3 strength training sessions, and 2 - 3 sessions flexibility exercises. For busy people like you, how to
implement these recommendations?

For you who do not have much time, here are examples of "mini-exercise" for fitness. The principle of this exercise is to increase the intensity in order to reduce the time / duration required to complete a workout.
Aerobic Exercise for Endurance (Endurance) Heart-LungBrisk walking, running, bicycling (stationary or regular bike), and swimming are examples of exercises that involve almost all the major muscles, which can stimulate the heart. If your time is limited, then try to implement them with high enough intensity whenever you have time. The intensity of exercise can be improved by increasing the speed of running / biking / swimming, although this way contain a substantial risk of possible injury to muscles and joints. To prevent injury, required heating (warming-up) are highly optimized. Another option is to "sort out" the exercise into two parts, the majority held the morning and partly implemented the afternoon / evening.
Muscle Strength ExerciseOne technique is to perform strength training by using a very light load and repeated as soon as possible (repetition maximum) for 30 seconds. After resting for ± 30 seconds, the practice continued in the same way to other muscles. Overall optimal muscle strength exercises involving the 8-10 types of exercises for the muscles of the body. Things to note in this exercise is that if you have not trained, then the rest periods between sets of exercises should be extended. However, to train the muscle strength you have to remember that gradually break period should be reduced, and at the right time load plus generation.
Flexibility exercisesFlexibility is obtained by performing a variety of stretching exercises, which can be done anywhere and in any position. Stretching can be done standing or sitting, and various objects can be used as training aids, such as walls, chairs, cabinets, etc..
But if you have not been able to do complete the exercise, following a variety of creative ways to spur you perform the exercise:

1. Use the stairs as much as possible and avoid the elevator and the elevator. As a variation, skip two steps at a time, or speeding up your pace.

2. Walk as much as you can. Many ways you can do, for example by a vehicle parked some distance away from the goal, and avoid shopping in the drive-through. If you move your goods, do not do as well so you have to walk back and forth. When shopping or looking for items, go quickly so you may not see the item you are looking for, which means that you need to walk back and forth. Eliminating the remote control is also a good idea.

3. Start doing hobbies that require body movements, such as gardening or woodworking. Or do various household activities such as sweeping, mopping (be more effective if done without the handle), window cleaning, etc.. In addition to good add exercise period, of course, you will quickly crowned as the male role model.

4. Playing with the kids (not the same with respect to children who are playing).

5. Come dance lessons. Salsa is becoming the trend of today's lifestyles, so you will gain a double advantage by skillful dancing. Once you start living an active, try to increase your physical activity, so that the level of physical fitness is maintained.

Bee Venom May Help Treat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

As it's frequently misdiagnosed for MS, it's really no surprise this research resembles results found for Multiple Schlerosis...

Melittin Restores Proteasome Function in an Animal Model of ALS
J Neuroinflammation, 2011 Jun 20;8(1):69

JNIAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a paralyzing disorder characterized by the progressive degeneration and death of motor neurons and occurs both as a sporadic and familial disease.

Mutant SOD1 (mtSOD1) in motor neurons induces vulnerability to the disease through protein misfolding, mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative damage, cytoskeletal abnormalities, defective axonal transport- and growth factor signaling, excitotoxicity, and neuro-inflammation.

Melittin is a 26 amino acid protein and is one of the components of bee venom which is used in traditional Chinese medicine to inhibit of cancer cell proliferation and is known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic effects.

The purpose of the present study was to determine if melittin could suppress motor neuron loss and protein misfolding in the hSOD1G93A mouse, which is commonly used as a model for inherited ALS. Meltittin was injected at the ZuSanLi (ST36) acupuncture point in the hSOD1G93A animal model.

Melittin-treated animals showed a decrease in the number of microglia and in the expression level of phospho-p38 in the spinal cord and brainstem. Interestingly, melittin treatment in symptomatic ALS animals improved motor function and reduced the level of neuron death in the spinal cord when compared to the control group.

Furthermore, we found increased of alpha-synuclein modifications, such as phosphorylation or nitration, in both the brainstem and spinal cord in hSOD1G93A mice. However, melittin treatment reduced alpha-synuclein misfolding and restored the proteasomal activity in the brainstem and spinal cord of symptomatic hSOD1G93A transgenic mice.

Our research suggests a potential functional link between melittin and the inhibition of neuroinflammation in an ALS animal model.

The Coffee for Health Benefits

 Benefits of Coffee

According to Harvard Women's Health, the consumption of several cups of coffee a day may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, the formation of kidney stones, colon cancer, Parkinson's disease, liver damage (cirrhosis), heart disease and prevent cognitive decline in brain power.
    * Diabetes. Twenty studies conducted worldwide indicate that coffee reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50%. The researchers suspect the cause is chlorogenic acid in coffee act to slow the absorption of sugar in digestion. Chlorogenic acid also stimulates the formation of GLP-1, a chemical that increases insulin (a hormone that regulates the absorption of sugar into the cells). Other substances in coffee that is trigonelin (pro-vitamin B3) is also thought to help slow the absorption of glucose.

* Cancer. Research has consistently shown that coffee reduces the risk of liver cancer, breast cancer and colon cancer.

* Cirrhosis. Coffee protects the liver from cirrhosis, particularly cirrhosis due to alcoholism.

* Parkinson's Disease. The coffee drinkers have half the risk of Parkinson's disease is lower than those who do not drink coffee.

* Heart disease and stroke. Coffee consumption does not increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. Contrast, coffee actually slightly reduce the risk of stroke. A study of more than 83,000 women aged over 24 years showed those who drank two to three cups of coffee a day had a stroke risk 19% lower than those who drank no coffee. Studies of a number of men in Finland showed the same results.

* Cognitive function. A study of 4197 women and 2820 men in France showed that drinking at least three cups of coffee a day can prevent cognitive decline in brain function due to aging up to 33 percent in women. However, similar benefits are not found in men. This may be because women are more sensitive to caffeine.
Negative Effect Coffee
However, coffee also has a negative effect. Caffeine as the main content of coffee is an addictive stimulant. Caffeine affects the cardiovascular system such as increased heart rate and blood pressure. Negative impacts that arise when you consume to excess.
For most people, drinking two to three cups of coffee does not give a negative impact. Drinking coffee with more frequency than that can cause heart palpitations, insomnia, headache and other disorders. Therefore, for those who consumed coffee that was not sleepy, for example because of lack of sleep, it is suggested that consumption is spread throughout the day.
Research on the relationship of coffee consumption with miscarriage does not provide uniform conclusions. However, for the safety of pregnant women are advised not to drink more than one cup of coffee a day.

3 Essential Oils for Summer

Summer is here and you know what that means … fun and sun, bumps and bugs. To help stay in tip-top shape all summer long, here are three essential oils to keep on hand.

Lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, has a characteristic aroma frequently used in room sprays and cosmetic products to help relive stress and support relaxation. The essential oil also has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can be very handy with minor bumps and scrapes. To make your own lavender ointment, warm 2-oz sweet almond oil over a double boiler and add 1/4-oz grated beeswax. Stir until the wax is dissolved then add 25 drops lavender Lavandula angustifolia oil, 10 drops bergamot Citrus aurantium var. bergamia oil, and 5 drops thyme Thymus vulgaris oil. Cool before placing in jars and leave it to completely cool before putting on the lid to avoid condensation.

Neroli, Citrus aurantium var. amara, has a decadent, light floral aroma reminiscent of a stroll through the garden. It is the quintessential aroma for summer ambiance. To support relaxation and to refresh the air, diffuse around your home (especially if you plan to staycation this summer!).

Sweet basil, Ocimum basilicum, is a pale-colored oil with a slightly spice aroma; it is reminiscent of cloves and camphor. Medicinally, the essential oil has natural antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which make it a useful ingredient in blends or when diluted in a carrier oil. In addition, basil’s essential oil is an effective natural insect repellent[1] and a good alternative to citronella essential oil if you do not like citronella’s strong scent; diffuse the essential oil at your outdoor events for a fresh aroma and some added insurance against those pesky mosquitoes.

Air Pollution

Air is an important factor in life, but with increasing physical development and urban industrial centers, air quality has changed. That were once fresh air is now dry and dirty. This if not immediately addressed, the change could endanger human health, animal and plant life
Air pollution is defined as the presence of substances or foreign substances in the air that causes changes in the composition (composition) of air from the normal state. The presence of foreign materials or substances in the air in a certain amount and in the air in a long time, will be able to interfere with human life. If such circumstances occur, the air is said to have been contaminated
Air Pollution Sources
Has been realized together, the current air quality has become a global issue, because the air has been polluted by human activities and natural processes. The entry of pollutants into the air can be natural, such as forest fire smoke, caused by volcanoes, meteorites and dust emission of sea salt; also largely caused by human activities, for example due to transportation activities, industrial, waste disposal, either due to decomposition or burning and household activities
There are two types of pollutants are as follows:
a. Primary pollutants, the chemical that directly contaminate the air in harmful concentrations. Bersal substance of natural air components such as carbon dioxide, which rises above the normal concentration, or something that is not normally found in air, eg lead.
b. Secondary pollutants, ie hazardous chemicals that are formed in the atmosphere through chemical reactions between the components of air.
Primary sources of pollutants can be subdivided into two major categories:
1. Natural sources
Some natural events that can cause air pollution is volcanic activity, forest fires, the activities of microorganisms, and others. The resulting pollutants are generally smoke, gases, and dust.
2. Man-made sources
Human activities that produce pollutants vary include the following activities:
a. Combustion, such as waste incineration, combustion in household activities, industries, motor vehicles, and others. Pollutants produced, among others, smoke, dust, grit (fine sand), and gas (CO and NO).
b. Smelting process, such as steel smelting process, the manufacture of soda, cement, ceramics, asphalt. While it produces pollutants include dust, vapors and gases.
c. Mining and quarrying, such as minerals and metal mines. Pollutant produced primarily dust.
d. Processing and heating as in food processing, meat, fish, and tanning. Pollutants generated mainly smoke, dust, and odors.
e. Disposal of waste, both industrial waste and household waste. Pollution of the water treatment plant is the exhaust. While materials that teruatam pencemarnya H2S is a gas that causes a foul odor.
f. Chemical processes, such as in the process of fertilization, the process of petroleum refining, minerals processing. Preparation of dagger, and others. Pollutants produced, among others, are dust, steam and gases
g. The process of development such as construction of buildings, streets and activities such. Pencemarnya materials which are mainly smoke and dust.
h. Experimental atomic or nuclear processes. Pencemarnya materials which are primarily gas and radioactive dust.

The Serving food principle

Serving food is one of the principles of food hygiene and sanitation. Serving food that is not good and ethical, not only can reduce one's appetite but can also be a cause of bacterial contamination. Some things must be considered in preparing the food in accordance with the principles of food hygiene and sanitation are as follows: presentation of the food-

1. The principle means that every type of food container is placed in a separate container and cultivated closed. The goal is
a. Not cross-contaminated food
b. When a tainted the other can be secured
c. Prolong-eat foods according to the level of food insecurity.
2. The principle means that the placement of the water content of foods containing high water content (juices, milk) on the eve of the new blended to prevent food served quickly broken. Food prepared in a high water content (in soup) more easily become corrupted (stale)
3. Principle means any edible part in the presentation of the material presented is a food that is edible. Avoid the use of materials harmful to health such as iron steples, toothpick or the plastic flowers.
4. The separation principle means food that is not placed in containers such as food in a box (boxes) or hamper any type of food should be separated so as not to mix with each other. The goal is to avoid cross-contamination.
5. Heat the principle that every presentation is served hot, still cultivated in hot conditions such as soup, curry, etc.. To set the temperature to note the temperature of food before it is placed in a food warmer should still be above 600 C. The best tool to maintain the temperature of the presentation is with the bean merry (renderer hot tub)
6. The principle of clean equipment means any equipment used crate containers and lids, boxes, dishes, cups, bowls must be clean and in good condition. Meaning had been washed clean with a hygienic manner. Both the meaning intact, not damaged or defective and used. The goal is to prevent disease transmission and provide an aesthetic appearance.
7. The principle of handling means any food handling or eating utensils are not in direct contact with members of the body especially the hands and lips. The goal is:
a. Prevent pollution of the body
b. Giving the appearance of a polite, nice and neat

"Modifications of neurobehavioral activities related to single episodes of consumption of different doses of bee honey were examined in rats under conditions of the hole-board (HB) test (to evaluate the level of anxiety) and open-field (OF) test (where the intensities of locomotion, rearing, and grooming were measured).

Animals of all subgroups had free access to normal saline, while rats of the three experimental subgroups consumed bee honey in the doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 g per 1 kg body mass (in the form of 10, 20, and 40% solutions, respectively). Among the doses tested, only higher ones induced considerable changes in the behavioral indices. The highest dose (2.0 g/kg) provided a more than twofold increase in the number of examined holes in the HB test; in the OF test, it also increased the numbers of crossed squares, rearings, and grooming episodes by 30, 37, and 164%, respectively.

Thus, our experiments demonstrated a rather significant ability of the natural product tested to relieve anxiety and intensify motor, research/orientational, and grooming aspects of behavior even upon single acts of consumption. Possible neurophysiological mechanisms underlying the behavioral modifications observed are discussed."
